Regardless of where you live in the country, the air quality in your home can have a huge impact on your overall health and wellness. But the scary thing about knowing this is that we don’t always know exactly what the air quality in our homes is like. Just like becoming “nose blind” to smells, you can become blind to the quality of air in your home if you become used to breathing subpar air. To help you have cleaner, healthier air in your home, here are three tips for improving the air quality within your own four walls.
Be Aware Of the Big Players
While there are a lot of things that can affect the quality of the air in your home, like dust mites and mold, there are actually three big culprits for having extremely low air quality. The three most deadly indoor air pollutants, according to Good Housekeeping, are carbon monoxide, secondhand smoke, and radon gas.
While secondhand smoke is easy to detect, the other two are less noticeable yet just as dangerous. To increase the air quality in your home, attempt to get rid of these toxins using any means necessary. This may include having a no smoking policy and getting carbon monoxide and radon gas detectors installed in your home to help keep your family’s health intact.
Increase Proper Ventilation
Even if you don’t have any issues with the above mentioned toxins, there are still plenty of other allergens to be on the lookout for. However, simply opening your windows to try to let out all those allergens won’t necessarily do the trick. Denise Mann of WebMD shares that sometimes opening windows can actually let in more harmful air than you currently have in your home. To combat against this, Mann suggests using trickle ventilation. Trickle ventilation is a screen you place on your windows that has extra filters to keep out the bad while also letting in clean, fresh air.
According to Mann, you can also have increased ventilation in your home by using your air conditioning unit to help remove pollutants and moisture as well as installing HEPA filters to help get rid of even more particles from the air.
Making Deliberate Cleaning Choices
Having a clean and sanitized home can help to keep allergens and pollutants at bay, but you may be surprised to know that some of the cleaning agents you’re using are actually adding to your problems, not solving them. For this reason, ApartmentTherapy.com recommends for homeowners to use eco-friendly and non-toxic cleaners around their home to keep harmful chemicals to a minimum. Another option is to make your own cleaners so you know just what is being used to make your home a cleaner space, both on the surface and in the air.
The air in your home can contribute to your overall health in many ways. Especially if you already have respiratory problems, making sure the air you’re breathing is quality air will be extremely beneficial for your body. To get the cleanest air that you can in your home, consider using the tips mentioned above today.
