My husband has recently been having heartburn attacks almost every night. At first I was just ignoring it but since it has been quite some time now, I suppose he has to have it checked. However, as I researched on information about heartburn, I ran across some home remedies that are worth trying before actually seeing the doctor. Here they are.
Food intake should be regulated not just the quality but the quantity as well. Smaller meals will avoid expanding the stomach too much and will help avoid heartburn. As for the quality, foods that are acidic, fatty, and spicy should be avoided. Instead, high protein foods should be eaten more. Coffee, alcohol, and other caffeinated drinks should be avoided as well.
Another thing, avoid laying down or exercising 2 to 3 hours after a meal. That would help the stomach juices stay down. When sleeping, put some blocks under the mattress so that your head will be raised by a few inches. Some say pillows work but not really. What happens with more pillows is that your body bends at the waist, increasing the pressure on your stomach from which heartburn will probably result. Lying on your right side is a no no as well.
One more tip: avoid wearing tight clothing, especially those that constrict the waist. Belts and tight jeans for example, may constrict your stomach and make your heartburn symptoms worse.
Try these simple tips and see if your heartburn disappears. If not, then go see your doctor immediately.
